Julia working with National Disability Theatre on the 2020 POP Tour

For the last 11 months, I have had the privilege of working with the National Disability Theater (NDT) on La Jolla Playhouse's Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour. Each year, the Director of Education & Outreach is charged with producing a new theatre for young audiences play that travels across San Diego county performing for about 20,000 students. No small feat! Well, this year was no exception. When the POP Tour started in 1987, the mission was to make live theatre accessible to the students of San Diego by bringing theatre directly to their schools. This year we have redefined the word "accessible" because of our partnership with the National Disability Theatre led by Mickey Rowe and Talleri A. McRae. The Playhouse team produced a play that not only was accessible to students but also accessible to the artists involved. All of the creative team identified with a disability and we set a goal for us to create a touring production that would be supportive of any accommodations needed from any artist. We just successfully launched the POP Tour into San Diego schools and all of our hard work is paying off! Read the article attached to learn even more about the project and how our partnership with NDT is setting a new standard for American theatre.
